2014 Goals

I'm not sure why its taken me nearly half the month of January to get this post written.  I've been writing it in my head for some time now but just haven't had the motivation to actually type it out.  But alas, here it is.

Remember last year when I wrote 13 goals for 2013?  Yeah, that was a gigantic failure.  I maybe accomplished 2 of those.  Life with a small child ended up being much busier than I anticipated. 

So, onto bigger and better things right?  This year I'm repeating one of my goals but only making 2 total in hope that I can actually accomplish them.

So what are my goals?  Here we go.

1. I want to stop biting my nails.  For good.  Finally.

I have been biting my nails since I was a kid.  No idea how I even got into the habit.  I've stopped temporarily multiple times but always end up biting them all off.  Its a horrible habit especially since I touch people for a living (I do wash my hands a zillion times a day).  I love it when my nails are long and pretty and am happy to show off my wedding rings and the beautiful sapphire ring Andrew got me last year.  And now that I'm selling jewelry I want to wear my samples and have them look good.

I had acrylic nails (the pink and whites) when I was in college for a while and loved them and got so many compliments all the time.  But working in health care I can't have nails that long and most facilities discourage this.

Plan?  I use Mavala Stop which is the nastiest, most bitter tasting stuff on the planet.  It really helps me with the mindless chewing while watching TV or in a work meeting etc.   The rest of the time I plan to simply try and use good old self control when I'm stressed or nervous.

Once my nails get longer I plan to get a manicure as a reward (considering the shellac because they are supposed to last longer - has anyone done this?) and hoping that nail polish and the fact that they look so pretty will keep me from biting and chewing.  Plus I think it would be fun to try all those nail design stickers that I see at Ulta.

This is the goal!!

2. I want to write down 1,000 things I'm thankful for throughout the year.

I got this idea from a gal at church who spoke about this during Advent.  She read the book One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp.  I follow Ann on Facebook.  I went to go download the book for my kindle on Amazon and read their sneak peek to get an idea about the book.  I could barely get through it.  It started literally with the author talking of her own birth (what good book doesn't start with a good description of crowning?) and went on to talk about how her younger sister was killed accidentally by the milkman.  I wasn't sure that I could make it through the rest of it if it was that depressing so I didn't download it. 

But I still like the idea of having gratitude for all the blessings in my life. 

So I bought a notebook and have been carrying it around with me and writing down things that I'm thankful for.  Some examples?

1. Baby Giggles
6. Back rubs from my husband
10. My dad

So this year it will be much simpler.  I will share a few things from my list of things I'm thankful for throughout the year.

  1. Those are two excellent, solid goals!

    I have a "Jehovah Jireh" box - to collect note cards with written-down gratitudes - but I *never* remember to use it. A notebook with a list (or maybe even a list posted on the fridge?) sounds like a great idea, and watching it grow throughout the year will be so encouraging. :)

    Good luck on not nail-biting anymore! I hope that yucky-tasting stuff works well for ya!
